In the photo above, a copper strip and two peltier thermoelectric wafers have been embedded in the stage of a microscope. The peltier act as heat pumps sucking heat from one surface (the copper strip) and dissipating it on the other (microscope body). By placement of a small gauge thermocouple, used as feedback to a temperature controller that is very similar to that shown in the photo “Stage Heater”, the temperature of the copper strip is precisely regulated. Sitting atop the copper strip is a custom fabricated chamber with a #1 cover glass as it’s bottom. This arrangement holds the temperature of the fluid within the chamber to about two degrees that of the copper strip, and is stable for set points of ambient +/-20C.
