This box was fabricated using a clear plastic that withstands alcohol, UV light and autoclave sterilization. The small black box is a retail hobby servo typically found in radio controlled airplanes and is used to rotate the gray roller in an oscillatory motion. Once sterilized the researcher wraps a strip of silicone sheet around the gray wheel anchoring it securely to the wheel. The opposite end is secured via the clamp at the left. The assembly is then placed in an incubator where cells are grown on the strip. A hand held controller is programmed for the rate, duration and amplitude of oscillations. The objective of this experiment is to grow cell in-vitro that experience similar dynamic stresses as those found in blood vessels. This wheel design greatly minimized turbulence preventing the cells from becoming dislodged. By modifying the program, periods of rest and exorcise can also be mimicked.
