Community Service and Engineering
Kelly V. Beck
Stanford Haas Center for Public Service

Abstract: At the heart of service-learning and community-based research are the principles of ethical and effective service and partnership. In this presentation I will invite students to explore the commonly cited principles of ethical and effective service. We will debate the application of these principles in engineering partnerships and projects through a couple of in-class activities. Reflection is a critical component of service-learning similar to the common engineering practice of analysis and review. We will discuss ways in which to integrate reflection and engineering analysis in relationship to the service and community partnership components of the class.

Biosketch: Kelly V. Beck is the Science Outreach Director at the Haas Center for Public Service at Stanford University. In this role Kelly directs the Haas Center's Science in Service program, a community science mentoring program in which Stanford science and engineering students receive training in teaching science through mentorship then serve as science mentors to children in after-school programs at the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula. Kelly is also a member of the Engaged Scholarship team at the Haas Center, through which she supports science and engineering service learning courses. Kelly is a physicist at heart, completing her undergraduate degree in physics and astronomy at Vassar College and her graduate degrees in physics and education at the University of Wyoming.
