Building a Culture of
Access
Sean J. Keegan, MS
Stanford University
Associate Director, Assistive Technology
|
Abstract: The authoring of accessibility standards
and guidelines, such as the US Section 508 Standards for Electronic and
Information Technology or the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, provide
technical definitions of access in an attempt to improve the usability of
materials by individuals who may have a disability. Ideally, the implementation
of such accessibility criteria can provide a foundation for assistive
technology to enhance the individual's interaction with content or devices. One
aspect of the discussion will focus on the impact of such technical
requirements on the use and design of assistive technology as well as content
and applications for creating content.
