Crutches: Walking with Four Legs
Maurice LeBlanc, MSME, CP

Abstract: This presentation will cover the following topics:

  • different kinds of crutch gait - foot over foot, swing to, swing through, and wheeling
  • energy expenditure compared to normal walking
  • innovative crutches - pogo crutch, swing crutch, crutch with foot on end, roller crutch, and carbon fiber composite material "S" shape

Biosketch: Mr. LeBlanc trained in prosthetics and orthotics at UCLA medical school following mechanical engineering at Stanford University. He has worked at UCLA Prosthetics and Orthotics Program, National Academy of Sciences, Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford, Palo Alto VA Medical Center, and Biomechanical Engineering at Stanford.
