Collaboration: From User-based Design to Co-design
June M. Fisher, MD

June with City Cart and its designers, Brandon Lopez and Eric Renard from San Francisco State University

Abstract: June will speak about her challenges and experiences as a non-designer in developing products that serve older adults. She will cover her involvement with 1) Stanford's Product Design course, 2) Stanford's Center on Longevity's 2015-2016 Design Challenge, and 3) the UCB co-design course she co-taught last Spring that included 15 older adults and 16 undergraduate students.

Biosketch: June Fisher is a Senior Scientist at the Trauma Foundation, "Chief Elder Officer" for Aging2.0 (a global network of innovators in aging), designer, and a frequent lecturer in Stanford's Department of Mechanical Engineering. She formerly was an Occupational Health Physician, Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California at San Francisco.

"In the late '80s, when products to protect healthcare workers from exposure to blood did not exist, I was invited by Rolf Faste to talk to his Product Design (PD) class at Stanford. In that course, a graduate medical student designed the first safety catheter that I had seen. I was elated by this. Based on this experience, I was able to get a small grant from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to develop strategies to promote the development of such safety medical devices. The grant covered stipends for Product Design students from Stanford and Industrial Hygiene students from UCB to collaborate with healthcare workers. Based on the enthusiasm of his PD students, Rolf asked me to be a Lecturer for the following year's course. Although I had a full plate with my clinical and teaching responsibilities at San Francisco General Hospital, I agreed as I was fascinated with the world of Product Design and the importance of the interaction between designers and users. I worked with Rolf and Sarah Little Turnbull for several years."

"I have continued my interest in Product Design and have now focused on aging."
