Stanford Taiko Tours Thailand-Summer 2006

This past summer, Stanford Taiko undertook its second concert and study tour of Thailand and Japan. Stanford Taiko performed at the Bangkok College of the Dramatic Arts, Yonok College, the American Consulate General in Chiang Mai, Lumpini Park, and several other venues, often sharing the stage with Thai percussionists, musicians, and dancers. Stanford Taiko's visit to Thailand lasted 10 days, and was followed by four days in Tokyo, Japan, where the group studied with master taiko players as Kiyonari Tosha and Eitetsu Hayashi. The group sincerely thanks the Vichit-Vadakan family, Dr. Jivasantikarn Nirund, Loxley Public Company Limited, Bangkok Municipal Authority, the Bangkok College of Dramatic Arts, Yonok College, Lampang Municipal Authority, Peter and Helen Bing, the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, the Stanford Department of Music, The Stanford Fund, and our many Stanford sponsors for helping make this tour possible.

Stanford Taiko Performed as the First Collegiate Group at Taiko Jam! (July 16-17, 2005)
Taiko Jam Banner

Stanford Taiko performed at Taiko Jam 2005, the featured concert at the biennial 2005 North American Taiko Conference in Los Angeles. Stanford Taiko is the only collegiate ensemble ever to be invited to perform at Taiko Jam. To prepare for the concert, Stanford Taiko members spent the week preceding the concert practicing taiko for several hours each day. We performed "Amaterasu," "Bayou," and "Tatsumaki" to two full houses filled with taiko enthusiasts. It was a privilege to share the stage with Mu Daiko, Zenshin Daiko, and Taiko Project. Not to mention Taiko Conference was a blast! We'd like to thank Johnny Mori and the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center in Los Angeles for this great honor.

Spring Break Residency with On Ensemble 2005

On Ensemble

During spring break 2005, half of the members of Stanford Taiko participated in an exciting week-long residency with On Ensemble, one of North America's premier professional taiko groups. Two of On Ensemble's founders are Stanford Taiko alums, and the ensemble had just performed at Stanford the preceding February. Our time with On consisted of all-day dance, theory, and basics workshops which remarkably improved our grace, timing, and form. We'd like to thank On Ensemble for the new perspective on the art form of taiko and for an overall awesome time. We'd also like to express our gratitude to the Toda family for the warm hospitality and amazing gifts: two new shakuhachi!
