I joined Northwestern in 1991 and worked closely with my colleagues to found and direct a new Ph.D. program in the Learning Sciences, affiliated with the interdisciplinary Institute for the Learning Sciences, and engaging faculty from education, cognitive psychology, and computer science.
At Northwestern, I developed a program of research that encompassed the Learning through Collaborative Visualization (CoVis) Project, 1992-1998, with Louis Gomez) and the WorldWatcher Project (1995-1998, with Daniel Edelson).
During this period I also served as Dean of the School of Education and Social Policy.
