Otto married, on March 5, 1924 in Nevada City, Nevada County, California,
Anna Elizabeth Traudt3,
in a ceremony performed by Lee A. Garthe, Justice of the Peace. Both
were residents of Yuba City at the time of their marriage. Anna
was born May 31, 1907 in Poplar Bluff, Butler County, Missouri, the
daughter of
Ernest William Traudt2 and
Nancy Judith (Wood) Traudt.
She had come to California with her mother in February, 1923,
following the death of her father in Missouri.
Children:
- — Kunde.
- Joyce Gladys Kunde, born January 19, 1927 in Yuba City, Sutter County, California.
- — Kunde.
- — Kunde.
- Robert Verne Kunde, born March 17, 1933 in Yuba City, Sutter County, California.
In 1925 the Kundes lived with Otto’s mother and brothers in the
family home at 200 Wilbur Avenue, Yuba City. Otto's occupation was
given as ranch foreman, and he remained a rancher through at least
1929. During these years the family changed homes at least twice,
residing in a house at 202 Wilbur Avenue in 1927, and one at 406 B
Street in 1929.
By 1930 they were back on Wilbur Avenue; in April of that year
Otto, Anna, their three oldest children, and Anna’s mother were living
at #208, next door to the old family home, which was then still
occupied by Otto’s mother and two youngest brothers. The family of
his brother Edward resided on the other side of them at #210. All three
homes were stated to be on a farm. Otto’s occupation was given as
farmer and Edward’s as orchardist. Anna’s mother was said to be a
practical nurse, though she was not working at the time.
In 1931 the family lived in a house at 377 Wilbur Avenue, probably
the same home, as all the houses on the street were renumbered the
preceding year. Otto was a driver for truckman Thomas F. Burns by
this time, and his occupation was given as driver as late as 1938. The
family continued to change residences fairly frequently. In 1936 its
address was given as Rural Route 3, Yuba City. By 1938 the Kundes
lived in a house at 465 A Street, Yuba City, where they remained
through at least 1940. Otto joined the Yuba City Police Force
November 18, 1939, on which he served for about fifteen years. Anna's
mother Nancy Traudt was living with the Kundes in 1939, in a light
frame house behind the family home. She died in it when it burned
down December 22, 1939.
Otto was of Yuba City, a member of the city police department, at
the time of his mother's death in January, 1941. Shortly after, on
February 16, he moved his household into the old family home at 429
Wilbur Avenue, Yuba City, where they remained through 1955.
Otto resigned from the Yuba City Police Department in 1953 due to
ill health, retiring as a sergeant. In 1954 he was working as a mechanic
for Associated Transportation Company, 442 B Street. In 1955 his
occupation was given as yardman in the trucking business.
He was admitted to the University of California Hospital in San
Francisco on April 24, 1955 for treatment of his illness. There,
following surgery, he died at 3:00 A.M., Monday, May 23, 1955, after
ten days in a coma. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday
afternoon, May 25, 1955, in the Ullrey Memorial Chapel with Rev.
Howard Daulton, pastor of the Yuba City First Methodist Church,
officiating. Mrs. Dean Yates was the organist. Casket bearers were
Grodon Phillips, Nick Frandrup, Lewis Duncan, Roy Kornmeyer, Don
Carlson and Frank Wamsley. Honorary bearers were O. O. Brown,
Harmon Ollar, Garry Miller, J. M. Shea, Truman Bao, and Jason Make.
Interment followed in Sutter Cemetery, Sutter, Sutter County, California, where his
grave long bore a marker with the following inscription:
