Joyce was raised in Yuba City, attending local schools and graduating from Yuba City High School in 1944. Her address was given as Rural Route 3, Box 9, Railroad Avenue, Yuba City, in 1940. From 1942 through 1946 her address was given as R.Rt. 2, Live Oak Highway, Yuba City. She was a clerk employed by Schwartz Fountain & Cafe in 1942.

Joyce married (first), — –, 1946 in —, — — Burns. He was born — –, — in —, the son of — Burns and — (—) Burns.

After their marriage the Burnses lived initially in a house at 408 Wilbur Avenue, Yuba City. In 1946 Joyce was assistant secretary-treasurer for Yuba City National Farm Loan Association, 416 Center, Yuba City.

In 1948 the Burnses lived in a house at 220 18th, Marysville. They were divorced before 1950.

From at least 1950 through 1953 Joyce resided at 429 Wilbur Avenue, Yuba City. Her occupation was given as stenographer in 1950, and as office secretary for the State Highways Division, Marysville, in 1953. She retired from the California Division of Highways (Caltrans) prior to her second marriage.

Joyce married (second),— –, 1953 in —, John George Panecaldo. He was born February 22, 1924 in Gridley, Butte County, California, the son of George Panecaldo and Marie (Tucci) Panecaldo. He was a lifelong resident of the Gridley area, a graduate of Manzanita Elementary, Gridley High School, and Yuba College. He served in the U.S. Army 51st General Hospital unit in the Pacific theater during World War II. John Panecaldo adopted Joyce’s child from her first marriage, and they had one child in addition, as follows.

  1. Jon Richard Panecaldo (Rick), born March 27, 1954 in Marysville, Yuba County, California.
After their marriage the Panecaldos lived in Gridley, Butte County, California; from at least the early sixties in a house at 783 Larkin Road, Gridley, the postal address of which is Rt. 1, Box 656, Gridley.

John began working for Stokely Van Camp, Inc., Canners, 870 W. Forbes Avenue, Yuba City about 1951. From at least 1960 through 1969 he was a buyer for the company, and by 1971 a district manager for its field department, a position he retained through his retirement. The name of the company was changed to Pacific Coast Producers by 1973. He retired after forty years with the company in 1991.

John was also a self-employed farmer and for many years the owner and operator of the Manzanita Store, established by his father in 1924. His hobby was doing cabinetry.

For many years Joyce worked seasonally as weighmaster and receiver at Golden Butte Receiving Station in Gridley. She served on the Manzanita School Board of Trustees, and as a 4-H leader. She was also a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, Theta Alpha Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Gridley Women of the Moose, Friends of the Library, Green Thumb Garden Club, the children’s charitable organization Focus, and Table Mountain Golf Club of Oroville, as well as an honorary member of Table Mountain Women’s Golf Club. She enjoyed travel, taking numerous motor home trips with her husband to his annual Army reunions throughout the U.S., as well as cruises and trips with her family and friends to Mexico, Canada, Europe, Hawaii and Alaska. Other favorite pasttimes included playing Bridge, golfing, reading and cooking.

John Panecaldo died Sunday, October 13, 2002, aged 78, at his residence in Gridley. He was survived by his wife, a brother, two sisters, two children, and two grandchildren. A graveside service was held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, October 16, 2002 at the Gridley-Biggs Cemetery. Pastor Chris Kersting of the St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Yuba City officiated. Arrangements were under the direction of Gridley-Block Funeral Chapel. Interment was at the Gridley-Biggs Cemetery.

Joyce suffered a stroke in 2010 requiring hospitalization followed by residence in a care home, where she was visited daily by her son Rick until his death about July 30, 2010. She was of Gridley at that time. She passed away Saturday, October 23, 2010, aged 83, in Yuba City. She was survived by her four brothers, one child, two grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. Graveside services were held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, October 29, 2010 at the Gridley-Biggs Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Ullrey Memorial Chapel.
