Here are my projects for class music 32n

Project 1

Project 1 - Tamish Pulappadi

As human beings, we can get so used to being in our comfort zones never pushing ourselves to be better. With this project I wanted to represent a value that I strive to live by. I believe it's extremely important to push your boundaries in order to grow as a person and I wanted to represent that through this project.

The phrase I chose – "Change is good" – is one that I first heard from my mother when we first moved houses as a child. But it has stuck with me throughout my life and I've applied it to many different aspects of my life. In my journey with music, I started out playing Rock music, adamant that I only wanted to play the genre of Rock. But as I pushed my comfort zone, I found a love for genres ranging from blues, to pop, to jazz fusion, to folk music. This is why I was so drawn to picking this phrase.

Sound + Words

"With wind and the weather beating round me
Up to the hill and the moorland I go.
Who will come with me? Who will climb with me?
Wade through the brook and tramp through the snow?

Not in the petty circle of cities
Cramped by your doors and your walls I dwell;
Over me God is blue,
Against me the wind and dew.

I sport with solitude here in my regions,
Of misadventure have made me a friend.
Who would live largely? Who would live freely?
Here to the wind-swept uplands ascend.

I am the Lord of tempest and mountain,
I am the Spirit of freedom and pride.
Stark must he be and a kinsman to danger
Who shares my kingdom and walks at my side. "

Objectives -

With this project I wanted to capture the essence of how it feels to sit outside in nature as the wind blows and the birds chirp. I feel a certain kind of peace which I tried to capture through my recording of the world surrounding me. The bird song combined with the wind played the role of the bed of sound for my piece.

I think added this sound to a sampler, pitched it up and added reverb to make the sound more musical. I then layered this with a guitar patch with 12 delay pedals in various arrangements to create a wall of sound. After this, I added other layers including a synth pad, bass guitar, more guitar melodies and a sparse piano.

My goal with this arrangement was to mimic the different elements of nature. The birds, swaying of trees, the interplay of wind with an open field that creates an almost whistle like ring, I tried to emulate the feelings these sounds invoke to make the listener feel a sense of calm.

Project 3

For my third project, I wanted to build a sad storyline through the videos I chose. When I first heard the soundtrack, it sounded to me like a love story gone wrong. It gave me the impression of tragedy, of remorse and of fear, so I chose to emphasise those elements of the soundtrack through my visuals.

My story follows lovers who at first were perfect. They have a nice home, kids and a family. But as the story progresses, we see that not everything that looks fine, is fine. The husband takes his wife's life. Why? we aren't sure. But in later scenes we see how much he regrets it and even tries to escape it. I tried to demonstrate that so many times, we make impulsive decisions without once pausing to think. This is why its so important to listen to your subconsious when it tells you you're doing something wrong.

Final Project

Time - Tamish Pulappadi

Sounds + Images + Words

This project is about the passage of time and how we spend our lives passing through it. In my casual conversations with friends around campus, I've often found that people love to reminisce about memories far in the past. They talk about how they miss their childhood, a loved one, a certain activity. I wanted to tackle those themes in this piece through my interviews with several students on campus. Through these interviews and the musical choices I made, my main goal is to inspire an appreciation for what time we do have. To remind people that our time is limited and so we should cherish each memory we get dearly and enjoy the moments we're gifted.

"And you run, and you run to catch up with
the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death"

Life can be beautiful. So enjoy every moment while you're in it.
