CILT, a distributed Center for Innovative Learning Technologies directed by Roy Pea, collaborated with IDEO in August 1998 to do a "deep dive" (a structured brainstorming technique) whose goal was to visualize a new ubiquitous hand-held educational device for learning mathematics and science. The device was dubbed Datagotchi. The concept explored how probes and sensors could attached to the Datagotchi in order to measure and display real-world properties such as speed, motion, time and heat.
SRI colleague Jeremy Roschelle and IDEO colleague Michael Mills planned the activity, and we convened over a dozen diverse research and industry contributors to develop the concept. This report has been cited as influential by numerous handheld computing device companies.
