TWO HIMES FAMILIES

My father had two different ancestors with the name Himes. His grandmother was Clara Himes Baughman, the daughter of Amos Himes, who settled in Kosciusko County, Indiana in the 1830's. His great-great grandmother was Mary Himes Hamman, the likely daughter of a Peter Himes who settled in Tuscarawas, Ohio sometime before 1820. There appear to no connections between the two different Himes families, one of which came out of Pennsylvania and the other out of New England. One Himes family was clearly Germanic (sometimes spelled Heims in early records), while the other was more likely from the British Isles, possibly Welsh or Scotch-Irish (Perhaps connected to New England families that spelled the name Hymes or Hyams in early records).

AMOS HIMES OF KOSCIUSKO COUNTY, INDIANA

PETER HIMES OF TUSCARAWAS COUNTY, OHIO

Amos Himes was born in Connecticut about 1808-1810. His wife Clara Watts was born in New York Their oldest children were born in Ohio in the 1830's and their younger children in Indiana in the 1840's and 1850's.

Peter Himes was most likely born in Pennsylvania, sometime before 1775, according to the 1820 census. He was one of the early settlers in Lawrence township, in Tuscarawas Co., OH
