Marion and Kendric's 80th Birthday Party 2006

Marion's birthday was on July 13, and Kendric's was not until October 13, but we decided to have a joint party, sort of half way in between on September 24, 2006.

We had about 60 people of all sorts. Some were neighbors, some were relatives, some were scientific colleagues, some were birders, some were fellow Docents of Marion's at the Cantor Art Center, and some just dear friends.

On our first date, Marion and I went to San Francisco (from Berkeley) to hear the Turk Murphy Jazz Band. Therefore, we thought it would be nice to have a jazz band play at our party. We had Bob Schulz and his Frisco Jazz Band play, minus a trombone and drums. Bob played cornet with Turk Murphy's band for 8 years. When Turk died, Bob started his own band. We have followed Bob's band over the years at jazz festivals, and recently I put up a web site for Bob. It tells all about him and his band, and you can hear some clips from some of his CDs. The first pictures below are of the "Cake Walkin' Babies". This is a parasol dance from New Orleans. The contestants compete with their fancy footwork and twirling of the parasols, and the winner gets the cake. There were two birthday cakes, and everybody got some.

Marion has the red parasol, her "little" sister Caroline is in a red dress, her daughter Joan is in a black dress, and fellow Docent at the Cantor Art Center, Pat Vadopalas, is in the light colored blouse.

You can download an old record (cake.ram) of "Cake Walkin' Babies From Home" by clicking here. You also need "Real Player 10" (or an earlier version "Real One Player") for the music (Mac or PC), which you can download free.
