There is great variability
within Deaf culture. Some students may or may not know ASL
or speechread. Deaf students may live in homes in which
family members sign or not. Deaf students may have hearing,
hard or hearing, or deaf family members, as may hearing students.
Deaf people are of all ethnicities, economic and social backgrounds,
represent all sexual orientations, ages, and beliefs, and may
communicate in any language at home.
