Multimedia systems for acquisition of non-Latin orthographies

Background:  There has been little study of the ways in which learners acquire non-Latin reading skills.  Yet becoming proficient in reading languages is important.  So how do people learn to read Thai, Chinese, etc.?

Research question:   Stated vaguely: how can multimedia CALL systems help students learn non-Latin orthographies?  Can listening while reading help students learn to read in these scripts?
