Interaction of
learner characteristics and CALL in meaning construction Background:
Constructivism is a learning theory that is expanding the ways
that language learners use the computer to improve their language
proficiency. This theory moves learners from using computers as drill
machines or information repositories to using them as tools that help
learners construct meaning. While many have recognized and enumerated
the benefits of this approach, there has been little research published
on the characteristics of learners who are able to benefit from using
computers in this way. This information, however, is necessary as we
train students to use technology. Research question:
As learners use computers to construct meaning, 1)
what specific, transferable skills and strategies do they
acquire? 2)
what are the characteristics of
learners who are most able to benefit from this learning
situation? 3)
what are the characteristics of learners who are less able
to benefit from this learning situation? 4)
how can the learners who face difficulties acquire the
skills/strategies necessary to benefit from using computers to construct
meaning? Suggested methodology/comments: Contact: Dawn
