Oakland tries to address how deeply rooted biases affect law enforcement

In some communities, the long-tense relationships between law enforcement and minorities are suddenly very public and very hard to ignore. Special correspondent Jackie Judd reports from Oakland on efforts to improve relations, using research from Stanford University on the deep and often hidden biases on race and inequality. Jennifer Eberhardt is interviewed in this story.


Stand Your Ground Laws

Panelists spoke about the effect of "stand your ground" laws on race relations and public safety around the country. Topics included the utility of Stand Your Ground laws from legal and policy perspectives, the impact of the laws on public safety; The impact of "stand your ground" laws on traditionally marginalized communities, and the impact of on the criminal justice system.

This was the western regional public hearing of the American Bar Association's National Task Force on Stand Your Ground Laws, held in conjunction with the ABA Annual Meeting at the Westin San Francisco Market Street hotel.

Social Psychologist Jennifer L. Eberhardt, 2014 MacArthur Fellow

Social Psychologist Jennifer L. Eberhardt is investigating the subtle, complex, largely unconscious yet deeply ingrained ways that individuals racially code and categorize people and the far-reaching consequences of stereotypic associations between race and crime. The MacArthur Fellowship is a $625,000, no-strings-attached grant for individuals who have shown exceptional creativity in their work and the promise to do more.
