BREEDING:

Emergent veg around water, marsh, bog, wet meadow. 2 broods.

NEST:

In low bush, grass tussock, sedge, often over water; bulky foundation of coarse grass, lined with fine grass.

EGGS:

Pale green to greenish-white, marked with reddish-browns. 0.8" (19 mm).

DIET:

Includes grass, forb, and sedge seeds.

CONSERVATION:

Winters s to c Mexico. Common cowbird host.

NOTES:

Male feeds female on nest. Female broods. Song learning occurs in first few months following hatching. Occ wades to feed.
