ABOUT THIS IMAGE. This image illustrates the 203
configurations of identity and nonidentity possible among the six
alleles at a locus in three diploid individuals.
Each dot represents an allele, each pair of dots in a row
represents a diploid individual, and a line connecting two dots
indicates that two alleles are identical by descent. The figure is
inspired by the work of DeGiorgio et al. (Unbiased estimation of gene
diversity in samples containing related individuals: exact variance
and arbitrary ploidy; Genetics 186: 1367-1387). In the
article of DeGiorgio et al., it was important to compute sums that
considered all of the identity configurations possible for sets of
four individuals.
The image appeared on the cover of the February
2011 issue of the American Journal of Human Genetics.
