VLAB, Abilities Expo, Faire, and Projects

Perspectives in Assistive Technology is a Winter Quarter Stanford course starting its ninth season in early January that explores the design, development, and use of assistive technology that benefits people with disabilities and older adults. It consists of semi-weekly classroom discussions; lectures by notable professionals, clinicians, and assistive technology users; tours of local medical, clinical, and engineering facilities; and an assistive technology faire.

Much more information can be found on the course website. Student enrollment has been very strong again this year with 37 sign-ups to date.

You are invited to attend the upcoming VLAB event at Stanford: Human Augmentation: Blurring the Line between Biology and Technology - What will the glasses, hearing aids, prosthetics, and wheelchairs of today look like in the near future? How will new ventures and entrepreneurs change the meaning of “disability”? What new industries will spawn to meet new customers demands? Attend this event to hear from entrepreneurs to discover how innovation blurs the lines between biology and technology, and explore the implications of what some call Human 2.0. Purchase your ticket on the VLAB website - $15 students, $35 GSB alumni, $40 non-refundable, and $50 refundable.

This event offers new technologies, possibilities, solutions, and opportunities. Go to the expo to discover ability-enhancing products and services, play adaptive sports, and attend informative workshops.

The Abilities Expo will take place on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday - November 21st - 23rd at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center. More information and free registration can be found on the expo website.

You are invited to participate in the Assistive Technology Faire - This third annual course event will provide an opportunity for students and community members to get an up-close look at a variety of assistive technology devices and learn about available services. Users of assistive technology products as well as small companies and agencies serving individuals with disabilities and older adults are encouraged to bring assistive technology devices and information to display, demonstrate, and discuss. Please browse to the Call for Assistive Technology Faire Participants webpage and contact the course instructor if you would like to be a part of this event as a user or vendor of assistive technology products or services. Everyone is welcome to attend the faire.

The Faire starts at 4:15pm on Thursday, February 19th just outside the classroom, Thornton 110.

Here are Dave's and Arne's photos from last year's Faire.

Do you have an idea for an assistive technology project? - You are encouraged to submit your project suggestions based on real problems experienced by individuals with disabilities or older adults in the local community. Visit the Course Project Solicitation webpage for the project requirements and how to best communicate your ideas. If your project is accepted, you can "pitch" it to the class on Thursday, January 8th. And if a student team selects it, you will have the opportunity to offer them advice, direction, and expertise in person or by phone and/or email. The deadline is Monday, December 1st.

Who should be contacted to answer questions or to provide additional information? - Please feel free to contact me anytime during the project suggestion process.
