Proposition 227 - Opponents
People who were opposed to Proposition 227 believed that bilingual education programs had shown great success in teaching LEP students. They stated that there were many ways to teach English besides bilingual classes, however Proposition 227 would eliminate these different approaches in favor of structured/sheltered immersion programs. They also claimed that the methodology of structured/sheltered immersion English classes had not been fully researched, and therefore should not be the only means available to teach LEP students. In addition, one year is not enough for students to be able to learn enough English to enter mainstream English classes. They also argued that placing students of all ages and all languages in one classroom might not be conducive to a productive environment for students and teachers alike.
