Activity Analysis:  Temporal outline of the activity

The method under analysis is a form of listening practice, known as cloze listening, which I have some experience with myself, but was most recently observed in the second year Japanese course at Stanford.  The instructor plays a brief video clip in the target language several times, eliciting general information from the students.  Next, the students open their textbooks, which contain a script of the video clip.  However, certain words and phrases are blanked out and the exercise is for the students to fill them in based on what they hear.  Finally, the students answer several questions about the content of the video clip.
