Controlled Bubbles

Glass Craftsman ran an article about this technique in their June/July 2006 issue.

first attempt - cooked to 1500F. Too hot!

2nd attempt. Glued red stringers based on graph paper under the glass

post fuse - 1400F with 20 min soak. Then saw it round.

12"

The bubbles all collapsed. My theory is that the 2 cases I've done this in did not extend the stringers to the edge of the piece. I suspect the center lifts up and lets the air out as the edges droop. The next thing to try is to put clear spacers to prop up the edges.

Bubbles Return!

9" round; pale blue on clear. Dark blue stringers. Used ~1/2"x1/4" clear spacers around the rim. The bubbles survived, so the sagging theory seems to be correct. Now to figure how to make the spacers more innocuous in the final product!
