Novel Surface Modification Using “Click” Chemistry

·        “Click” Chemistry on Self-Assembled Monolayers (SAMs)

We have recently been exploring and developing Cu(I) catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloadditions (Sharpless “click” chemistry) as a methodology for modifying well-defined surfaces such as alkyl thiol SAMs on gold

·        Our work has shown that the reaction is fast, quantitative, and chemoselective

·        We have used this reaction immobilize ferrocenes, oligonucleotides, and porphyrin macrocyles.  We are currently exploring how porphyrin electrocatalysts behave on SAMs

·        Recent work (see “News and Views”) has demonstrated that one can electrochemically control this reaction and selectively functionalize electrodes that are only 10 microns apart from each other
