Ayça Alemdaroglu is a post-doctoral scholar at the Anthropology Department. Ayça earned her doctorate in sociology at the University Cambridge. Her dissertation, Knowing your place: inequalities, subjectivities and youth in Turkey, is a study of social inequality in relation to subjectivity with a focus on young adults in contemporary Ankara. More specifically, her dissertation studies the production and reproduction of social inequality through economy, education system, urban space, gender relations and politics, and analyzes the ways in which young people experience social hierarchies and negotiate their place in society. Ayça has published book chapters and articles on eugenics, nationalism, masculinity and youth with a focus on Turkey. At Stanford, she will do research on for-profit global higher education companies and teach courses on social change, inequality and politics in the Middle East.
