Angel's primary theoretical and research interests focus on political economy, gentrification and the politics of "race" and ethnicity within urban environments in the United States. His dissertation, Transforming the City: Negotiating Gentrification, Race and Class in Chicago, Illinois investigates how notions of class, race, urban citizenship and the uses of the built environment affect and are affected by the socio-economic and discursive processes of gentrification. Angel received a BA in Social Anthropology from the University of California at Irvine and a MA in Cultural and Social Anthropology from Stanford University.
