This talk will use pre-trial discovery litigation in U.S. courts as a way of elucidating the relationships among law and the members of its materially constitutive entourage—files, registers, stamps. In this paper, I will argue that the office paraphernalia used in discovery proceedings are not just necessary parts of law, but also themselves subjects and products of the law they create.
