I’m interested in urban relations of difference, forms of cosmopolitanism, and transnational religious networks that connect port-cities across South Asia and the Indian Ocean region. Combining ethnographic and historical approaches, I also look to explore how a variety of actors in postcolonial port cities remake colonial urban environments, incorporating them into local urban life and reconstructing them as colonial heritage. I come to Stanford with an M.A. in Anthropology from Dalhousie University where my thesis investigated postcolonial spatial formations, heritage practices, and gentrification in Galle Fort, a former colonial city in Sri Lanka.
