Leveraging Nature-based Tourism into Environmental Stewardship
Bill's Research A unique collaboration of Stanford faculty from Education, Anthropology (including Bill Durham), Psychology, and the Persuasive Technology Lab is carrying out a project to foster pro-environmental behavior following tourist visits to two famous parks. The project includes a pilot study in partnership with California’s Año Nuevo State Park, known for its elephant seal experience, followed by a larger-scale study in the Galapagos Islands. Capitalizing on an untapped post-trip spike in motivation shown by visitors to both sites, the group is developing and testing follow-up interventions designed build people’s stimulated interest in natural history into lasting pro-environmental behaviors related to personal, community, and national/international action.
