Project 3 Process -
behind and beyond

To me, Bye Bye Blues is the aural embodiment of a journey. However, the concept of a journey can be intepreted in different ways. A cliché poet may say life is a journey; a college student may say that even a short day can be a long journey. In the video, I try to combine these two concepts. The little boy at the beginning and end and the working adults in the middle represent the passage of time in life. Simultaneously, the video seemingly takes the viewer through a typical day of any person with a functioning role in society: we wake up, we do what we have to, occasionally we dream of a break, and then we go to sleep.

To begin, I listened to Bye Bye Blues many times to dissect the song into individual elements. In a notebook, I "storyboarded" these elements with what I wanted to be seen in my end product. Numerous clips from a total of four videos from the Prelinger Archives were used to make video. I manipulated the speed of some clips to fit the sound cues throughout the song. The video begins slowly when we wake with the boy and it steadily builds speed as our workday begins. A slight repreive is offered when we begin to daydream of a vacation. Suddenly, we are thrown into the busiest, often disorienting, and most climactic part of the day before we are finally able to get the repreive we desprately need at the end of the day.  Hopefully, I was able to take viewers on this journey behind and beyond the present with these sounds and images.
