The Rewards of Growing Tomatoes |
Growing tomatoes has many rewards. Of course, the taste of a homegrown tomato, fresh from the garden, is hard to beat, and to have an abundance of fine tomatoes in a range of varieties adds to the pleasure. |

The competetive tomato grower may find other rewards. In 2001, I won two blue ribbons, and a total of $12, at the San Mateo County Fair and Floral Fiesta. I took first place in the tomato category in the garden vegetable competion with "Super Fantastic," and I won in the cherry-tomato category with "Grape". Both grown using seeds from Tomato Grower's Supply Co. The required entry was a plate of five tomatoes, for each category. My tomatoes were judged by appearance only. Of course, regular old tomatoes aren't my specialty, I would have rather won with these, also from my 2001 harvest: |
