I originally wanted to make a static image appear more lifelike and perceptually captivating. I ended up with an optical illusion of a spinning record. The idea came from the work of Akiyoshi Kitaoka who has created several similar illusions with several variations on color and geometry.
The illusion itself depends greatly on using four highly contrasting colors (which usually include black and white), in a repeating pattern. Each set of adjacent rows of the pattern (or in this case, ring of the circle) are interleaved such that the same colors, in two separate rows, are never touching. The illusion appears to move in the direction of the lightest color, which is why it appears to spin in the direction of white side of the smaller circles in the background.
