All cells
control their environment through semipermeable membranes that regulate the
flow of solutes including sugars, amino acids, nucleotides, and inorganic ions.
The transmembrane movement of these nutrients is facilitated by integral
membrane proteins referred to as transporters. Due to the high level of metabolic
activity associated with neuronal activity, transporters are of particular
importance in the mammalian brain – they are crucial for normal brain
function, central to many pathological processes, and ideal sites for
pharmacological intervention in disease. Our lab studies the role of
transporters in the pathology and treatment of disorders of the nervous system.
