Welcome

Our research group studies how social and cultural change moves across communities and larger populations, primarily in China and Taiwan. Our theoretical goal is to explore whether there are generalizable and predictable processes of social and cultural change. Our regional goal is to analyze the vast changes that happened in China and Taiwan over the 20th century in order to contribute to a better understanding of the challenges in this part of the work in the 21st century. Our methodological goal is to develop and promote scientific approaches to ethnographic research, including team projects. Work in our group is funded by the US National Science Foundation and several Stanford sources: the Presidential Fund for Innovation in International Studies, the Institute for Research in the Social Sciences, Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, and the Center for East Asian Studies.
