Algebra for Cats

I am teaching algebra to my cat Zoey. I don't see any reason why cats shouldn't get the advantage of learning algebra too. For example they can use it to figure out the diameter of their food dish. This will be very important to cats of the future!

Is it really important?

This is my first year of algebra (8th grade). I recently switched schools and at my old school, I never experienced pre-algebra. So, I got right into the hard stuff right away. If we could just get rid of the STUPID - yes I mean STUPID !! - jerks who don't know a HOT-line from a numberline, maybe we could all make some progress! I can understand algebra to point but when it goes ove that point I just under stand it at all. My Math teacher,Mr.Cooper, moves to mast in the subject. The begining of the year we were on alegbra. Like 20N+30N=2000. Thats the point don't get!

Algebra Forever(Not Really)

Algebra Forever, I can sympathize with you. We will be going to block scheduling soon and my kids hate Algebra. Here are some suggestions: 1. have them keep a journal of questions they encountered from their homework 2. use some manipulatives to explore some concepts like solving equations and factoring 3. have someone from the business community come in and speak to the class about where they really will use this 4. have the students do oral presentations where they explain a problem. It took me 30 years!

I got A+ grades until algebra was introduced. The school realized a lot of kids were having problems with algebra so opened a pre-algebra class, but by the time they got to me, they said there wasn't any room left and I would just have to tough it out where I was. My dad had a discussion with my counselor, after which the teacher tutored me for an hour after school everyday. During that tutoring I was just b-a-r-e-l-y able to grasp on to a shred of understanding, but once in the classroom, it all went out the window. At the end of the semester the teacher told me he really should flunk me, but I deserved something for effort. I got a "D" which was enough to pass me out of the class. It wasn't until years later I realized my dad must have told them that if they weren't going to make room for me in the pre-algebra class, they had better find a way to make sure I passed that class. When I finally went to college at age 29, I had to start off with MATH 054 before I could go on to MATH 055, then Pre-Algebra, and finally College Algebra just to be able to get my required basic classes out of the way. I had a wonderful teacher, Mrs. Flournoy, who has been the only one thus far able to teach me any level of algebra (054). It is a shame they don't have her teaching the other levels, because that is as far as I have been able to get. I finally got an "A"!!! Unfortunately, I still don't have even my associates degree since I have not been able to go any farther. I do not have difficulty learning most subjects; I even made the Deans list with an equivilent 15 credit load while working 2 part time jobs and taking care of my family, so what's the deal with algebra? Why do I have to learn textbook algebra anyway?

AlGeBrA! WHY ME????

I'm ok with Algebra

I think algebra is ok if you just put your mind to it. It's not hard and it's not easy. I am in the 9th grade taking ALGEBRA 1 and I'm passing it with a B. Now I'm sort of worried because it's starting to get complicated. My teacher gave our class 150 equations to solve and i didn't do none because I feel an F is an F. It don't make sense to turn in about 30 completed out of 150. Then he gave us about 35 more the next day and I debaiting on should I do them or not. Is it the teacher, the student, or the environment in the classroom. This is two of the equations: 23m-4e=7e+2 ; x+6=-6x+(-13) Can anyone out there my age solve those equations without any difficulties.

One Last Time

I got A's in High School Algebra I and II. Moved on to Geometry, flunked, and gave up on math. Then, as an adult, I took College math with pre-algebra. I really thought that I was finally beginning to understand it. Now, as a 50 year old, I must complete College Algebra I and II to complete my Bachelor's Degree. I've gone blank. how does cancelling work? how do i add algebraic fractions? Is it possible to have a negative area under a graph. My calculator sometimes gives sf'(x)dx as a negative but isn't this impossible? too confusing

Hi! Right now my classroom is having trouble with word problems. I should be doing my homework right now but what's the use if i don't understand it right. To start Algebra is not really my cup of tea. I don't hate it but I don't love it ethier. At my school the minute you step in the class room there is a quiz siting on your desk for you to complete. When we learn something the next time one arrives in the class room we have to take a quiz. If you have problems my teacher will tell you that " you should already be on this level, I shouldn,t have to tell you". That's why algebre isn't my cup of tea.

Algebra is killing me!!!!!!

I am having to wrestle with algebra every day, and I can tell you, I'm the loser every time!!!!! I enjoyed algebra when I first started, but now I'm sick of it!!!!! it's too hard. I wish there were some new and exciting ways of learning this stuff, because I realize it is essential if I want to pass!!!!! HELP!!!!!!!! My brother is soo awesome at math, and so is my dad. But I find myself as more of a "arts" person. Algebra is very hard, especially dividing polynomials.!!!! yow!!!! My opion is that you need to stop whinning and do some learning. I'm in 8th grade and in algebra 1 and also getting a C. Yes it is hard but if you try [and quite whinning], you might start understanding it. Try math help [on-line], and maybe staying after school to get some help. This is the DUH factor people!

senior history major at the university of northern iowa

I just wanted to add a little something to some of these comments. Basically, in history a high apptitude in mathematics or algebra is not nessasary. Although in my case a unique situation occured. When i was in high school i usually could pull out c's and b's on algebra tests without putting forth much effort. But once i graduated and went to college things changed. College Algebra was much more difficult and basically i was on my own. Sure there are people who will help but for the most part you are assumed by your professors that you can carry forth whatever is assigned to you. I ended up getting a d+ in my college algebra class, again slipping by and knowing that many history classes lay ahead. But, that summer after my freshman year it occured to me that there really were a lot of neat concepts in algebra and for my own benefit i decided to read and teach myself algebra. Case in point, when i returned to school that next year my grades improved from a 2.6 gpa to a 3.5 gpa. Tests were easier and i was much more efficent when taking them and this held true in all other facets of my life in general. To sum this up: algebra is not only mathematical principles, but it is a philosophy or a way of thinking if you will, it trains your mind and makes otherwise complex and overwhelming tests seem much easier both in school and in life. So if you are planing on attending college no matter what your major, algebra is helpful and it just plain makes sense. Don't let it get you down! Master it and your life will improve. Good Luck!!!!

Algebra is a fucking joke

I used to be a good math student until algebra was introduced in 6th grade I think, It was so dumb and pointless, but I did try to keep with it, but eventually the walls came crumbling down and I started flunking math regularly. I'm Homeschooled and am in 5th grade, and I will soon be using algebra 1/2. I think the reason Saxon Math is so good is because it explains everthing step by step, and gradually gets harder and harder, so I think that even a 4th grader could do algebra.

Think logically!

I teach Algebra, and love it. It just makes so much sense. I love the feeling of knowing that I did it right, because when I check things back in, it works. I wish I could figure out a way to pass on my excitement to my students. Any suggestions? I know that you can't see a reason for why you have to learn it, but you don't even have to ask that question about parts of sentences in English or dates of civil war in Social Studies. It seems like I only get that question when students think a subject is hard. If they understand, they don't ask why. Math is a subject that builds on previous knowledge, and sometimes the only reason you need to know a specific topic is so that you can go on the next topic, but believe me, sooner or later there are some neat reasons why you need to know math. Probably the most important reason is so that you can learn to think logically through a problem, step-by-step. It will help in ANY situation!

Why algebra?

I think Algebra is very, very confousing. Iam a sophmore and I have skipped my math class for the last two years because I don't understand it. I understand your frustration but do me a favor and do a search on the top 25 highest paying jobs(doctors, pilots, computer programmers, engineers). After you have completed your seacrch find out the percentage of those jobs that require college mathematics. Finally, I dare you to find one college with out Algebra as a requirement for entrance. I wish I could go back to Algebra I

If only I could go back to Algebra it seemed so hard when I was taking it, yet now it sounds so easy. I have forgotten many key ideas and concepts from Algebra that could help me out a lot more in Calculus based math. Beginning Algebra in college

Algebra is NOT easy

Well I personally think that Algebra 2 is a waste of time. Of course learning it isn't all that fun either. As a matter of fact it is very hard. I don't understand any of it and worst of all I have a major final tommorrow and I don't get any of it. I was out of school for half a semseter due to certin cirucimstance and I had no one's help getting caught up in it except Daniel's and he barelly got it. I survived Algebra I and II

I took algebra I in 8th grade and it made no sense to me. By the time I took algebra II, though, it was easy as pi! I guess it took two years for the concepts to sink in. From then on, I LOVED math. My daughter may take algebra this year and I am so excited. I can't wait to help her with her homework and solve more problems. For years I have been trying to show her how to do her math challenge problems at school using algebra, but she would not listen to me. If you think algebra is a waste of time, wait until you take geometry! Proving theorems is completely useless. I went to an engineering college and never had to prove a theorem in my four years there.

Algebra is the devil

I passed vocational nursing school with honors, second in my class. I made A's in Literature, and love to write essays and research. I can't pass algebra. What's wrong with this picture?? Algebra is setting me back, not helping me at all. They rush you through it, throw in crazy problems they never showed you how to work, and I swear the books must be written by chimpanzees. Algebra in college is not for adults, but is geared only towards recent high school graduates who did well at it. I just had a test, thought I did well, but made a 52. Algebra classes are evil, and someone is making lots of money from all the beginning, intermediate,college algebra, and those who retake them several times.

Algebra is like getting your balls kicked in

I will never in my life have any need for this. Right now i am currently attending college for Graphics Design. Algebra to me is like learning the language of tongue speaking in church. It is all spiritual gibberish. I absolutely hate Algebra. I think i would rather defuse fart bombs on a weekly basis than to take the quiz i am almost gaurunteed to fail. I would rather jump naked on a huge pile of thumbtacks than to suffer that torture. I also believe that my algebra teacher is a spawn of Satan. Thank you.

Algebra should not be forced on us

As an older student going back to college to finish a degree that has been put on the back burner for 15 years, I am faced yet again with the daunting problem of almost all English majors: passing College Algebra as a degree requirement. I know for a fact that I will never use Algebra for any reason whatsoever, and there is no one out there with any legitimate reason why someone who wants to write fiction and teach English should take Algebra. This is a serious problem with the U.S. education system and leads to more feelings of resentment and isolation than any math lover could possibly understand. Why are our schools in trouble? Why do we have so many problems with violence, drugs, and sex in our schools? Algebra is the reason. E-Mail me if you think you can explain why an English major should have to sit through hours of tedious boredom in such a subject.

Algebra is Easier than it looks

Algebra is mush easier than it looks. I know it seems like you are trying to plus letters but it is all in steps. Once you have those steps memorized (which is easy if you take it at a reasonable pace), then you have algebra down pat. And as for how you will use it... IF you dont know it... You WON'T, but if you do know it... It will teach you problem solving that you will never regret. By the way Im in algebra II and I plan on taking calculus my senior year.

OK, i have to say some of you people have a PATHETIC attitude to algebra and maths. Algebra is one of the most logical things on the planet, oh and by the way you do need it like every day in life idiots. One thing however i have to point out is that, majority of maths grades depend on the teacher. IF THE TEACHER IS CRAP THEN YOU WILL FAIL NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU TRY, and that in general goes for any subject. so fellas grit your teeth and trust me your attitude to maths may change from one day to the next.
