| Southwest Road Trip /The greatest concentratrion of the tufa towers are located at the South Tufa grove just off of Hwy 120 East, at the south end of Mono Lake. Tufa is limestone formed by underwater springs rich in calcium mixed with baking soda (carbonates). The tufa towers were underwater when Mono Lake was twice the size it is now during the ice ages. Tufa around Mono Lake today is exposed because the lake level fell dramatically after water diversions began in 1941. |
