| Southwest Road Trip /Rising nearly 700ft, the Eureka Dunes are among the tallest sand hills in the western hemisphere. The highest dunes loom before the striped face of the Last Chance Range. It is easy to spend hours exploring on foot or simply basking on the sand, soaking in the view. On breezy days, the wind constatnly resculpts the dunes rippling surface, quickly erasing footsteps and other imprints left by visitors. More than 50 plant species grow here, including the endemic Eureka Dunes evening primrose and Eureka Valley dune grass. Conservationists succeeded in closing the Eurkea Dunes to vehicles in 1975 and declared a Natural Landmark. I can't imagine these sand hills echoing with the roar of dune buggies and other off-road vehicles. I'm glad BLM gave up control to the National Parks Service. |
