Southwest Road Trip / The Racetrack. A remote basin between the Cottonwood and Last Chance ranges contains an ancient lakebed. What makes this playa so unusual is the presence of tire-sized tracks etched into its surface by skidding boulders that can weigh up to several hundred pounds. A rough dirt road that begins near Ubehebe Crater is the only access to Racetrack. The route climbs through acres of cactus gardens and after 20 washboard miles it reaches Teakettle Junction. Then it's another 5mi on to Racetrack. Some scientists theorize that rocks move across the Racetrack when the right combination of shallow flooding, ice, and high winds are present.
