| Southwest Road Trip /La Hacienda de los Martinez. Antonio Severino Martin (later changed to Martinez) came to Taos in 1803 and purchased 66 varas of land along the Rio Pueblo that ran to the ridge top to the west. In the Spring of 1804 he moved his family from Abiquiu to Taos. The Hacienda started out with four rooms and by 1827 (the year Martinez died) it had grown to 21 rooms. The hacienda with its two foot thick adobe construction and windowless exterior walls served as a refuge for family and neighbors during the occasional Indian raids. The day we toured the house there were only two other people there - it was pleasant having an opportunity to visit the various rooms where the family lived - it was quite peaceful. |
