Southwest Road Trip /images of saints (santos) on retablos (paintings on wood). Local pine were used for retablos and water-based paints were made from local and imported vegetal and mineral pigments. Religious images were brought to New Mexico by the first settlers in 1598 and were imported throughout seventeenth century. This pic was taken at Harwood Museum of Art on Ledoux st in Taos.
