Girl handing out "Tsegayreda", yellow daisies, which signifies the start of the new year. In Ethiopia, girls wearing new white dresses go to their neighbors' houses and sing "Abebayehosh," a traditional song. Boys give away their paintings of yellow daisies. In return, neighbors might give each child the equivalent of 50 cents or $1.In the evening, Ethiopians build campfires in front of their homes to signify that "we burn the old year and move on to the new year". Outdoor burning bans have curbed that practice in the United States. lhailu@stanford.edu |
