Awassa / The hippos of Lake Awassa - Hippopotamuses are primarily folivorous, grazing on grasses growing along the banks of their river habitats. Hippopotamuses may very occasionally eat small animals or consume carrion. They are NOT, I repeat...NOT agressive towards humans. It's a myth. These Hippos were actually afraid of us even after we cut the motor to the boat. Anyway, Hippos are extremely graceful in the water, despite their clumsy appearance on land. Their specific gravity allows them to sink to the bottom of rivers and walk or run along the bottom. Their eyes and nostrils protrude, allowing the animals to see and breathe while otherwise submerged in the water. Watch the short CLIP.
