                                                “ticks”

My process in creating this piece came from my own life experiences. I wanted to tell a story about my journey with Tourette’s in fourth grade. The sounds of travel in an airport with the familiarity of people’s ambiance should be calming, but the overlaying of panned background noise, unsynchronized ticking, and the gradual distortion of Appasionata by Beethoven in the background captures the energy within my body when I needed to ‘tic’. At the climax of the audio, is when I discovered art as a way of expression. Through film, books, poetry, and playwriting, I resolved the utterances within my body into the energy within my writing. I found how to express emotions that I couldn’t before decipher. The ticking of the clock syncs up and the breathing slows. The ambiance and pilot’s voice fade back in, and I’m ready to take off.

For the piano, I recorded my friend playing in our dorm’s lounge. I also recorded the poem and the breathing in my dorm’s closet. The instrumentals were created with different synths and virtual instruments. I took the clock ticking and other ambiance sounds off of the internet.

“The patterned sounds flow through my eardrums
how rivers relax in crevices once more
But this ticking counts to nowhere
this distance is far from what I know

Then,
I picked up the pieces
Gamboled clumsily through comforting melodies and metaphors
The utterances of ticking resolved in ink”
