About Me:
I am an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Stanford University in the Department of Medicine, a
Core Faculty Member of the Centers for Health
Policy and Primary Care and Outcomes Research, and a Faculty
Affiliate at the Stanford
Center for Longevity. My research interests, CV, and other details
about my professional life can be found here.
I am interested in a wide range of topics in decision science as it is
applied to health policy, especially in international contexts, and
welcome the opportunity to discuss and collaborate in these areas.
I was born in rural Maine in a town called Farmington and grew up in Lansdale, Pennsylvania outside of
Philadelphia, where I attended North Penn
High School. One wonderful opportunity that I had while in high
school was attending a Telluride
Association Summer Program (TASP) at St.
John's College in Annapolis, Maryland. St. John's itself is a
fascinating place that teaches student through discussions in seminar
and with tutors based on a Great Books curriculum. TASP in this
environment was an excellent educational experience at which I formed a
number of long-lasting friendships -- an experience I would recommend
to high school students.
I attended Harvard as an
undergraduate where I studied History and
Literature of America as well as a lot of electives in mathematics
and computer science. Some excellent teachers included: Margo Seltzer, Harry Lewis, Michael D. Smith, Noel
Ignatiev, Laurel
Thatcher Ulrich, Sacvan Bercovitch,
and Alan
Heimert. David Eilenberg
and I wrote Hasty Pudding
148 (Morocco 'Round the Clock). I met my wife Sara as an undergraduate,
and we were married
on July 5, 1998. From 1993 until 2008, I lived in Cambridge,
Massachusetts, with the exception of two years 1997-8 (Israel) and
2001-2 (Costa Rica).
The year in Costa Rica was spent in collaboration with my wife involved
in community outreach and public health research relating to type
2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular
risk factors in the rural areas surrounding Grecia,
Costa Rica. It was an extremely influential experience in my life
as it shifted my career focus from computer science and software
engineering to computational modeling of diseases in populations and
public health.
I also attended Harvard as a graduate student in Health Policy,
concentrating in Decision
Science. My advisor was Sue Goldie
who was the chair of my thesis committee that also included Josh Salomon
and Sendhil
Mullainathan. During my dissertaton, I had the opportunity to work
and do research in Cape Town, South Africa with Lynette Denny.
For my final year at Harvard, I was affiliated with the Radcliffe Institute of Advanced
Studies as a Graduate Fellow, which afforded me access to an
amazing community of scholars with diverse interests in the arts,
sciences, and humanities.
Family and Friends:
My wife, Sara, is an anesthesiologist, who
trained at Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women's Hospital, and
Massachusetts General Hospital. Her research interests include patient
safety and simulation. On June 12, 2007, she gave birth to our son,
Eytan Shlomo, who some have described objectively as "absolutely
delicious".
My parents, Jill and Larry
Fiebert are social workers and therapists. My father published an
interesting research report relating to the Indian-American and
Korean-American communities in the area that his social service agency
covers. The report is discussed in a number of articles including this
one here.
My in-laws, Suzan and Fred
Goldhaber, are teachers (of reading and theoretical physics,
respectively). The Goldhabers have many physicists in the family,
including my wife's grandfather Maurice,
grandmother Trude,
great-uncle Gerson,
great-aunt Shulamit,
uncle Michael, and
brother David. David
and his wife Ilana live in Palo Alto along with our nephew Zev and
niece Shira.
I am fascinated by some of the things my friends do. I include some
links to those with websites and other interesting web information
