Purpose

Welcome! Our website is designed to assist teachers connect with Filipino students in America by providing an understanding of their history, language, culture, and lifestyles.


History

In 1898, the United States assumed colonial rule of the Phillipines. This leads to an "Americanization" of the Filipino culture as the people embrace parts of the American language and lifestyle.

Due to this colonialization, many aspects of the Filipino culture are affected, such as the goverment, the education system, and other parts of the Filipino society.

Because of the enormous effect the Americans had on the Filipinos in the Phillipines, immigration to the United States after 1898 increased steadily, especially to Hawaii and California. By 1965, Filipinos became the second largest immgration group to California, after Mexico.

Language

Tagolog is the main language of the Phillipines simply because it is spoken in the capital city of Manila. There are many other regional dialects throughout the cities and islands of the Phillipines. The languages of the Phillipines have been heavily influenced by Spanish and English because of the historical presences of those two countries. For many Filipino Americans, Tagolog remains a strong connection to their homeland.

Customs

Filipinos in America retain much of their culture and customs in America. Many cities have strong Filipino American communities that continue to celebrate the traditions and festivals of their homeland.
