Japanese-English Dictionaries

» English to Japanese Dictionary/Japanese to English Dictionary
Thiw website provides both Japanese-to-English and English-to-Japanese dictionaries. This is a wonderful resource for students who do not have a Japanese writing system on their keyboard because the Japanese-to-English dictionary allows you to type in romanized format and converts what you type into hiragana. The dictionaries are very expansive and very easy to use. This website is extremely useful.

Japanese Teaching Websites

» eLanguageSchool.net
This website provides a series of useful articles ranging from grammar to reading basic Kanji. The articles on this website are all very independent from each other in that there is no clear order of going through the grammar lessons. The lessons are clear, succint, and easy to understand and therefore serve as good resources for quickly reviewing already-learned material. However, there are references to pop culture and Japanese animation, which might make the content slightly esoteric to the Japanese learner who is not familiar with anime characters.

» Learn Japanese Language
This is a webcam Japanese teaching website in that you interact with a real Japanese teacher using a webcam. However, this service is not provided for free and courses can cost up to $5,250 per year. Only this most expensive plan provides an overall assessment of your performance by the instructor at the end of the course.

» Maktos: Japanese Is Possible!
Maktos is a very thorough and useful website that is especially geared towards anime and video game fans. The articles, however, are very readable to non-anime and video game enthusiasts and contain many useful examples to illustrate grammar points.

» Japanese for the Western Brain
This website is geared towards English-speaking students and frequently compares and contrasts English and Japanese grammar in its lessons. The lessons are very long and detailed. No Japanese writing is used and all examples are provided in romanized Japanese, or romaji. Therefore, this website should be used to learn Japanese grammar, but not how to read and write actual Japanese characters.

Supplemental Learning Tools

» Japanese Kana Quizzes (Hiragana and Katakana)
These are useful quizzes that help test your reading ability of hiragana and katakana.
