Well, at least the weather was great... our record was not! We got switched out of the pool announced on Friday to one with Hippie Chicks (a DH derivative), LA, Team Tall (everyone over 6'2" with 2 at 5'7" for contrast) and us. We went 0-3 in pool play and lost to the Spin Doctors in crossover. All but the first game (against the Chicks) were good ones; we were intimidated against the Chicks (as we always seem to be against the top rung teams); the others were all within 1-2 points. We were unable to score the big points at crunch time. So, Sunday we were in the B bracket. We easily knocked off a team from Sonoma and then played the Davis (mostly) college team, losing 14-13 at cap. Ditto for the point made above. As a finale we beat the Cal team fairly easily. After an evening's reflection, the problem areas I saw were: o too big a roster and consequent problems with subbing (we had 22 out on Saturday). o too many turnovers. Our +/- ratio was terrible. More later when the stats are more digested. o we panicked near the goal line at crunch time. I'm hoping that this was first-tourney-of-season jitters and will go away as we play more tourneys... Many thanks to Heather for taking stats all day Saturday! We have stats for all our games (except Cal's). As for the tournament results, Matza Balls was playing Seattle Sockeye in the final when I left. Looked like MB was pulling away when I left. MB was one of the theme teams. There was a Catholic team too. El Camino! lost to Corridor in the octals; Spin Doctors didn't make A and bagged Sunday; Stanford A didn't make the cut either (on point differential). Monkeyshine did make octals, out of the pool we were in Friday! Reminders: According to my records, Ron, Kevin and Alex still owe tournament fees. Kevin is done with DF, moving on to El Camino! next weekend (sniff). Also, Craig Howald announced he's intending to play with El Camino this summer. Evening practices start this Wednesday and Thursday on the NORTH IM fields. DUI this weekend. Find a place to stay! Richard --- I was pretty disappointed at losing all those 1-2 point games and let it seep in to my summary. Let me correct that here. We had a -very- tough pool (as we did last year) and we played every game except one with a win in our sights the whole way, just falling short at the ends. Much better than last year's results. We waxed Sonoma (rightly so) and beat Cal easily. They had beat us twice last season. Those games were all exciting! There were real ups and downs in emotion: soooo close to winning and then just not. As Xen pointed out, we would not have been close to those teams at this time last year. Our (at least my!) expectations have really risen. We had some real Fools spirit from several players, whose efforts will be shown on the Web page when films get developed: Bartie played in a bright yellow flower print full-length dress. Matt took the cake on commitment by arriving in a pseudo-Mohawk dyed purple(!) - shades of Max shaving a DF into his head last year! John arrived as promised in a bow-tie and red suspenders holding up his usual stylish micro shorts. Tom wore a dress-shirt and tie; Erik and Alex turned up in backwards dress shirts. Well done, guys - you'll be world famous soon, since our Web page is now being internationally advertised by the UPA. I'd also like to commend Xen on his subbing and team leadership over the weekend. It was a really hard job to balance PT against situation subbing with such a large roster. It also shows what a good job Drew does tournament in and out. We need more people like Xen on the sidelines talking it up to players on the field., calling ups and forces, and generally maintaining psycho intensity. We did a good job of getting ready for each game and even the first game of the tournament. There were lots of good signs from this weekend. Richard --- Let's not forget Lee, who very trickily shaved the right half of his mustache and the left half of his beard. (or was it the other way?) Of course, none of us noticed for about an hour, because from profile, he looked quite non-Foolish... -- Ron Ho, Intel Corporation
