Reactant Selector : Select a Reactant Name from the Thermodynamic Library

Table of Contents

This Reactant Selector screen provides three methods for picking reactant species from the NASA Glenn Thermodynamic Data (thermo.inp).   These data are documented in NASA TP-2002-211556, 2002.   The data names, fitted coefficients, temperature ranges, and references are also available at the ThermoBuild website http://cea.grc.nasa.gov/ ( see About ThermoBuild ).    Initially all species names are listed in three tables at the bottom of the screen.   At any time the user may click on a selected species name followed by the OK button.   Nomenclature, a description of the lists and methods of culling the lists are discussed below.

NOMENCLATURE
Names are made up of up to 15 contiguous characters, usually the chemical formula.   Formula names longer than 15 characters are truncated.   Isomers are usually distinguished by adding as much of the isomer name as possible.   The letter "l," which is normally lower case, is always replaced with an "L" to avoid confusion with the number "1."   In the possible condensed product list (middle table), the phase of the species is indicated by characters inside a set of parentheses at the end of the name.   Phases normally indicated by one of the first four letters in the Greek alphabet are replaced by the corresponding letters "a", "b", "c", and "d".   Subscripts are printed on the same line as the atomic symbols.   The gaseous (left table) have no phase designation.

TABLES OF SPECIES NAMES
Any of the species listed in the three tables may be selected to be a reactant. The number of names in each list is given in parentheses. The species are divided into three lists as follows:

SELECTING THE REACTANT
User selects ONE reactant name from any of the three tables followed by the OK button.

REDUCING THE NUMBER OF LISTED SPECIES FOR EASIER SELECTION
Selections of reactants from the large number of species in the NASA library can be overwhelming.   The list may be made more manageable with the following options.

User types in the reactant name or partial name followed by either the RETURN or the ENTER key.   All species names containing the typed string of characters will be listed in the tables.   The user clicks on the selection followed by the OK button. This returns the user to the Reactant screen.

After clicking on this button, the user picks atoms from the Periodic chart.   All species names made up of these atoms will be listed in the tables.   User makes his selection and clicks the OK button

HELP
The Help button displays the Help Menu for the Reactant Selector.

OK
The OK button closes this screen and returns to the Reactant dataset.

CANCEL
The Cancel button cancels the selection.
