File Transfers

1)      FTP is not a secure file transfer mechanism.  If it is required for some reason, a local security administrator will typically ask that a client run in “passive” mode.  This is a somewhat less onerous condition but still transmits a user’s password in clear text during authentication.

2)      SCP is a file transfer protocol that uses the SSH communication protocol and similarly restricts itself to port 22/TCP.  A client application will be centrally available for distribution in the 3rd quarter of 2001 to Stanford University users.
